Bikash was found in 1996 with an objective to protect the rights of the Children with disability, to educate their families, to integrate the challenged children into their communities and to prevent & reduce the childhood disability by taking a holistic approach to the issue. We run a centre for Special Education which is housed in a purpose-built building and around 200 children attend the school each day from Monday to Friday from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. It caters for children with a wide range of disabilities from mild to moderate including Cerebral Palsy , Intellectual and developmental Disability, Autism and Speech-Hearing Impairments. Many of the children suffer from Multiple Disabilities. There is a nursery unit for children from  2-5 years and the older children are split between those with mild & moderate disabilities and those with severe disabilities. Those with severe disabilities are given a functional education to improve their mobility, social and language skills. Wherever possibilities prevail, children with milder disability are prepared for integration  into mainstream school. There is a focus on providing the children, with a Vocational Education from the age of 14 years on important trades like readymade garments, jute crafts, soft doll making etc. The Centre also focuses on Early intervention from birth to 2 years. The children are brought to the Centre as soon as possible in order to have their disability diagnosed and assessed and a process of rehabilitation starts. The centre also provides training & advice to parents on how to help & care for their child at home.
